In our homes, it is common to find granite products such as kitchen countertops, linings for bathrooms, floors or stairs in common spaces, etc. The floors of restaurants and dining rooms, workplaces, sidewalks and squares, in many cities are paved with natural stone. All these spaces where we inhabit and circulate daily are exposed to accidental staining by liquids or food remains more or less aggressive, such as oils, coffee, tea, citrus, cola drinks, wine, tomato, ketchup, urine, etc. And depending on the exposure time to which they are subjected and the type of stone, it will be more or less susceptible to permanent staining and altering its appearance causing loss of brightness, colour change, discoloration, increase of roughness, etc. This process alters the ornamental value of the stone, becoming pathology and offering a negative image of the product.

There is a large bibliography on stone stains, but always related to alteration processes, either by aging, exposure to meteorological agents or polluting atmospheres, by biological colonization or by faulty placement on site. However, few published works are known about stains that occur accidentally by elements of daily use and some pathology related to these stains that clients complain to marble manufacturers and other manufacturers of stone.

There are countless websites that offer remedies for the care and cleaning of natural stone against accidental stains, most of them commercial. In these webs, it is advised on how to eliminate a stain offering multiple ranges of products for cleaning them.

Of all the web pages consulted where remedies are offered for the care and cleaning of natural stone against accidental stains, the advice from the Marble of Institute of America is distinguished, where it differentiates and describes several types of stains in the stone:

Carrying out of a test to evaluate the staining capacity of different granites

We hope that these recommendations can be very useful in dealing with an accidental stain, without resorting to commercial products, more or less effective, which are applied without the necessary rigor, with the frequent result of a failure excess, not only by its lack of efficiency but by its lack of permanence in time.
